Things to do in Fojnica

Fojnica sits around 45 km and roughly 1 hour from Sarajevo in the Fojnica valley, and the reason to come is the Franciscan monastery founded in the 14th century.

It holds a firman issued by Sultan Mehmed II in 1463, a decree guaranteeing the Franciscans protection under Ottoman rule and one of the more significant documents of religious tolerance from that period. The monastery and the small historic centre together take 2-3 hours to see properly.

Locals also use the Reumal spa on the edge of town for its sulphurous waters, though it is a functional facility rather than a resort. Away from the monastery, Fojnica is still a working industrial town, and it is worth knowing that before making the detour.
