Things to do in Visoko

Visoko sits 30 km and roughly 40 minutes from Sarajevo, and for over a century after 1183 it was the seat of the medieval Bosnian kingdom, not a footnote to it. The site of Mile, on the edge of town, is where Bosnian rulers were crowned and where the monastery of Sveti Nikola once stood; little remains above ground, but the ground itself carries that history.

The municipal museum sets out the coronation charters, coinage and the royal lineage in a couple of rooms, worth 20 to 30 minutes. Visoko was also a leather-tanning centre for generations, and a handful of workshops still work hides the old way. Since 2005 the town has been better known abroad for the so-called Bosnian pyramids on the hills above it; that is a separate story, covered on its own page.

A half-day covers Visoko's medieval sites comfortably, and it combines easily with a short trip out from Sarajevo.
