Things to do at the Museum of the Siege

The Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Zmaja od Bosne near the former Sniper Alley, holds the country's permanent exhibition on the siege of Sarajevo, which lasted 1,425 days between April 1992 and February 1996 and killed an estimated 11,000 people, including close to 1,600 children.

The rooms display the material culture of a besieged city: ration cards, improvised stoves made from tin cans, clandestine newspapers printed by candlelight, and a reconstructed apartment interior with no running water or electricity. Entry costs around 6 KM.

The building itself is a modernist structure from 1963, originally built to house a museum of the 1945-1992 revolution, and its Cold War-era galleries now frame a different, more recent history. Labels are in Bosnian and English throughout.
