Things to do in Jajce
Jajce sits 165 km and roughly two and a half hours from Sarajevo, and it earns the drive: a waterfall of about 20 m drops straight through the town centre, the only place in the world where that happens. Above it, a medieval fortress held the coronation of Bosnia's last king, Stjepan Tomasevic, in 1461, and beneath the streets run royal catacombs cut into the rock.
A short walk upstream, water mills still work the Pliva where it splits into channels before the fall. Jajce is also where Yugoslavia's federal state was proclaimed in 1943 (AVNOJ), commemorated today in a museum on the site.
Add the Pliva lakes just outside town for swimming, and this is a full day out, not a quick stop, best started early to get the waterfall before the coach parties do.
