Things to do at Markale Market

Markale is a working market first: a covered hall on Mula Mustafe Baseskije selling fruit, vegetables and dairy from small producers, with an open-air stretch of stalls around it. Prices run below what you pay in the old town's touristy grocers, and it is a fair place to check what things actually cost in Sarajevo.

The site also carries a grim historical record. On 5 February 1994 a mortar shell landed among the crowd of shoppers and killed 68 people; on 28 August 1995 a second shell killed 43. Both dates are marked with a memorial plaque at the market.

The two events are documented separately in war-crimes tribunal rulings, and the market has continued to trade daily since the siege ended in 1996.
