Things to do at the Sarajevo Brewery

The Sarajevo Brewery sits in a pseudo-Moorish building put up in the late 1890s under Austro-Hungarian administration, and it has drawn on a protected natural spring beneath the works since it opened.

That well is why the site matters beyond beer: between 1992 and 1996, with the municipal water network cut or under sniper fire, the brewery's spring became one of the few safe sources of water in the besieged city, and residents queued here at real risk to fill containers. The brewery still produces Sarajevsko, the lager on almost every table in town.

5 km north-east of Bascarsija, an easy 15 to 20 minute walk, and the building itself, not a production-line tour, is the reason to make the detour.
