Things to do in Lukomir
At 1,469 m, Lukomir is the highest permanently inhabited village in Bosnia and Herzegovina: stone houses under wooden shingle roofs, a pastoral economy of sheep and hay, and a handful of families who now stay only through summer, retreating below when snow closes the plateau for much of the winter.
It sits roughly 50 km and 1 h 30 from Sarajevo, and a good stretch of that drive is unpaved track rather than proper road, so this is not a casual afternoon outing. Lukomir is also the starting point for hikes down into the Rakitnica canyon.
It is often paired with Umoljani, the lower, easier-to-reach village en route, but Umoljani is a stop, not the destination: Lukomir is the end of the plateau road and the more authentic of the two.
