Things to do at Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque

Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque is the largest historic mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built in 1531 under Gazi Husrev-beg, the Ottoman governor whose endowments shaped much of central Sarajevo. Entry is around 5 KM, and the courtyard, sadrvan (the ablution fountain at its centre) and the attached turbe housing Gazi Husrev-beg's tomb are all open outside prayer times.

Shoulders and knees need covering, and headscarves are lent to women at the entrance free of charge. Turn up around Friday midday or during a call to prayer and the doors close to visitors for the duration, so check the posted prayer times before walking over. It sits right on the edge of Bascarsija, but the mosque itself is a five-minute stop, not a half-day out.
