Things to do in Sutjeska National Park

Sutjeska National Park, around 130 km and 2 h 30 from Sarajevo, was established in 1962 and is the oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Maglic, on the border with Montenegro, reaches 2,386 m and is the country's highest peak, drawing multi-day hikers rather than casual walkers.

At Tjentiste, a large angular concrete monument marks the 1943 Battle of the Sutjeska, one of the fiercest confrontations of the Second World War in the Balkans, and the surrounding valley makes a good half-day stop even without a summit attempt. The park also protects the Perucica primary forest, one of the last of its kind in Europe, though visiting it requires a licensed guide and is worth planning as a separate trip.

Marked trails, mountain huts and river gorges fill out a stay of two days or more, with the closest overnight bases in Tjentiste village or Foca.
