Things to do at the Yellow Fortress

The Yellow Fortress (Zuta Tabija) is an Ottoman-era gun emplacement stacked above Bascarsija, reached by a 10 to 15 minute uphill walk from the old town and free to enter at any hour. The climb earns a wide view over the red-tiled roofs, minarets and the ring of hills that cups Sarajevo, best around sunset when the muezzin calls overlap across the valley.

During Ramadan a cannon is fired from the fortress each evening at iftar to mark the end of the daily fast, a moment locals gather for rather than a show staged for visitors, worth watching quietly from the walls rather than the platform's edge.

Don't confuse it with the higher, quieter White Fortress further up the same ridge inside the Vratnik walls: the Yellow Fortress gives the closer, sharper view of Bascarsija's rooftops, the White Fortress a wider but more distant panorama over the whole valley.
