Things to do in Sarajevo

Sarajevo sits in a bowl at roughly 500 metres, the Miljacka running through it and hills closing in on three sides. That shape is why the siege lasted 1,425 days and why the city still gets a winter smog problem: temperature inversion traps pollution in the valley through December and January, so it is worth checking the air quality index before you plan a day outdoors.

The tram network dates to 1885, one of the oldest continuously running systems in Europe, and still gets you across the centre for a couple of KM. Note there are two bus stations on opposite sides of town, easy to mix up when booking onward travel. The city itself sits in the Federation, with Republika Srpska starting a short drive east; both run the country jointly, and neither side needs your opinion on it.
