Things to do in Livno & the Wild Horses

Livno sits on a karst plateau near the Croatian border, 165 km and roughly 2 h 30 by road from Sarajevo, mostly reached as a stop en route to Dalmatia rather than a dedicated day trip.

The draw is the Livanjsko polje, a flood plain grazed by free-roaming horses, best seen in spring and early summer when the ground is wet; they are wild animals, not a bookable attraction, so a visit can turn up nothing. Part of the polje floods into a seasonal lake depending on snowmelt, usually visible from late winter into spring and dry by mid-summer.

The old town is modest: a hilltop fortress, a handful of streets, and the Bistrica spring rising cold and clear at its edge, worth twenty minutes rather than a half-day stop.
