Srebrenica and the Potocari Memorial

Srebrenica is roughly 140 km from Sarajevo, a drive of 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. In July 1995, more than 8,000 men and boys were killed here; the Potocari Memorial Centre, in the former UN base opposite the memorial cemetery, holds their names and belongings.

The cemetery contains rows of white headstones, added to each year as identifications continue. This is not a stop to combine with sightseeing elsewhere that day. Visitors are expected to keep quiet, dress plainly, and refrain from photographing people at the graves or inside the exhibition.

There is no cafe culture built around the site and none should be expected.
