Things to do in Medjugorje
Medjugorje is a Catholic pilgrimage town built around reported Marian apparitions dating from 1981, centred on St James Church and the hillside apparition and Cross Mountain sites. It sits about 25 km south of Mostar, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car, and is best visited as a half-day add-on to a Mostar trip rather than direct from Sarajevo, which is over 150 km away.
The Vatican has not issued an official ruling on the apparitions themselves, only recognised the parish's pastoral work; say so plainly. The town itself is dense with religious souvenir shops, guesthouses and coach parking, a sharp contrast to the stone-and-river towns nearby.
St James Church holds regular English-language Mass in summer, and climbing Apparition Hill or Cross Mountain takes 45 minutes to an hour each way over uneven rock, so proper shoes matter more than piety.
